Elegant glamor from a bygone era: The beauty and opulence of the 1940s and '50s captured in new book of fashion photographer Gordon Parks' greatest work. These glorious fashion photographs from the 1940s and 1950s hark back to a bygone era before photoshop, when models looked like real women.

They are the work of legendary photographer Gordon Parks, who throughout his long career was a man of many firsts including the first African-American staff photographer for Life magazine and later the first African-American to direct a major motion picture.

Parks first gained his reputation with a camera for stunning fashion shoots such as these. From the beginning, he challenged prevailing rules about how to photograph fashion, including objects, group poses and streetscapes that were selling not just clothing but a lifestyle too for emerging independent woman.

Parks challenged prevailing rules about how to photograph fashion

He devised both dramatic and subtle poses for the models, who wore suits, dresses, coats and hats from new collections. He placed them in the studio and on location in Chicago, Paris and New York, using realistic scenes and the city as backdrops.

His photographs suggested that he caught his subjects off guard and midaction, as if they were waiting for a bus, in the middle of a shopping trip or expecting a lunch date. Parks captured these casual moments with a sense of intimacy and awareness. The viewer imagined the moment, which was framed dramatically, as if part of a narrative. The models’ poses, though subtle, provoke ideas about desire and the idealized body.

Parks’s importance to fashion photography is now beyond question. He challenged the genre by inventing ways to enrich our ideas about style.

Born into abject poverty in Kansas in 1912, Parks was sent to live with family in Saint Paul, Minn. when he was 14 after his mom died. Soon after he found himself turned out on to the streets.

Parks worked odd jobs to get by until 1938, he was inspired to take up photography after seeing images in a discarded magazine.

He bought his first camera at a pawn shop, and within months his pictures were being exhibited in Minneapolis. Success as a photographer quickly blossomed from there.

Vogue was among the magazines he read closely after passengers left copies behind in the rail cars along the route between Chicago and Seattle. Those magazines guided him as he taught himself to make photographs that engaged a wide variety of people.

With a clear understanding about how to ‘look’ on city streets, in cafes and society balls, Parks’s fashion photographs are about the experience of being dressed.

He communicated beauty, vanity and pleasure in his photographs of fashionably dressed women, which began with his first assignment in St. Paul at Frank Murphy’s Women’s Clothing Store.

His first wife, Sally, who was a designer and often modeled for him, also may have inspired his interest in fashion.

As well as fashion, Parks' photographs also pursued his passion for documenting the lives of African Americans.

Parks’ talent eventually led him to New York City, where, despite the racial prejudice of the time, he was hired by Vogue’s Alexander Liberman to shoot a collection of evening gowns.

He continued to freelance for Vogue for several years, developing a unique style that was realistic, romantic and full of movement.

  • Even though everyone has seen before and after pictures, I figured I would post Norma Jean/Marilyn. I figured she would be good for the thread because she went through so many changes.

She remains one of the most iconic sex symbols of all time.

But newly released photos of blonde bombshell Marilyn Monroe show her in a softer, gentler light, before she blew up as one of the most famous movies stars of all time.

She appears in these photographs in a monogrammed polo, fresh faced at 24, and already looking at ease in front of the camera.

Effortless: Previously unpublished photographs of Marilyn Monroe have recently been found in LIFE archives

The photographs, taken by LIFE photographer Ed Clark, were shot in Los Angeles’ Griffith Park in August of 1950.

He revealed in a 1999 interview with Digital Journal that a friend from 20th Century Fox had called him about a ‘hot tomato’ he just signed.

That tomato, of course, would become Marilyn Monroe.

Sporting her signature bobbed flaxen locks, the model and actress was shot in a variety of poses. Mr Clark said he was able to photograph her at his leisure since she was relatively unknown at the time.

He told the magazine: ‘We’d go out to Griffith Park and she’d read poetry. I send several rolls to LIFE in New York, but they wired back, “Who the hell is Marilyn Monroe?”’

The editors weren’t entirely off base. Only four years before, the woman being photograph called herself Norma Jeane Dougherty.

The images were discovered as LIFE magazine underwent the daunting task of digitalizing each negative from every photo shoot.

It remains a mystery why the magazine didn’t publish these photos after Monroe skyrocked to fame.

The only scrap of insight is in the form of a note attached to the photos, saying that one of the takes was ‘over-developed and poorly printed.’

In 2011, a photographer stumbled upon a folder of black-and-white negatives containing even more never-before-seen photos of the actress, in another session before she was well known.

The photographer for that shoot still remains unknown.

The bombshell was discovered in 1946 by 20th Century Fox executive Ben Lyon, who noticed her modelling in magazines.

Some people only like her as Norma Jean, others only like Marilyn. I like her in both looks. I'm biased though because she's my favorite.

  • Rita Hayworth
    Before Margarita Carmen Cansino

Rita was born in Brooklyn with parents of Irish, English and Spanish descent. Columbia thought Hayworth's image was too much of a Latin style, which caused Hayworth to be cast into stereotypical Hispanic roles. So she underwent electrolysis to broaden her forehead and accentuate her widow's peak, dyed her brown hair red, and went on a diet. Some sources say she bleached her skin as well, but I'm not sure if this is true.

During the so-called Golden Age of Hollywood, which lasted from the end of the silent era in American cinema in the late 1920s to the early 1960s, movies were prolifically issued by the Hollywood studios. The start of the Golden Age was arguably when The Jazz Singer was released in 1927 and increased box-office profits for films as sound was introduced to feature films. Most Hollywood pictures adhered closely to a genre—Western, slapstick comedy, musical, animated cartoon, biopic (biographical picture)—and the same creative teams often worked on films made by the same studio.

After The Jazz Singer was released in 1927, Warner Brothers gained huge success and was able to acquire their own string of movie theaters, after purchasing Stanley Theaters and First National Productions in 1928; MGM had also owned a string of theaters since forming in 1924, known as Loews Theaters, and the Fox film Corporation owned the Fox Theatre strings as well. Also, RKO, another company that owned theaters, had formed in 1928 from a merger between Keith-Orpheum Theaters and the Radio Corporation of America[3].

RKO formed in response to the monopoly Western Electric's ERPI had over sound in films as well, and began to use sound in films through their own method known as Photophone [5]. Paramount, who already acquired Balaban and Katz in 1926, would answer to the success of Warner Bros. and RKO, and buy a number of theaters in the late 1920s as well, before making their final purchase in 1929, through acquiring all the individual theaters belonging to the Cooperative Box Office, located in Detroit, and dominate the Detroit theaters.[4] For instance, Cedric Gibbons and Herbert Stothart always worked on MGM films, Alfred Newman worked at Twentieth Century Fox for twenty years, Cecil B. De Mille's films were almost all made at Paramount, director Henry King's films were mostly made for Twentieth-Century Fox, etc.

Movie making was still a business, however, and motion picture companies made money by operating under the studio system. The major studios kept thousands of people on salary—actors, producers, directors, writers, stunt men, craftspersons, and technicians. And they owned hundreds of theaters in cities and towns across America, theaters that showed their films and that were always in need of fresh material. In 1930, MPDDA President Will Hays also founded the Hays (Production) Code, which followed censorship guidelines and went into effect after government threats of censorship expanded by 1930. [6] However the code was never enforced until 1934, after the new Catholic Church organization The Legion of Decency - appalled by Mae West's very successful sexual appearances in She Done Him Wrong and I'm No Angel [7]- threatened a boycott of motion pictures if it did not go into effect [8], and those that didn't obtain a seal of approval from the Production Code Administration had to pay a $25,000 fine and could not profit in the theaters, as the MPDDA owned every theater in the country through the Big Five studios

You can challenge everyone and everything, but you can’t challenge the time! These Hollywood male stars were young and handsome before. Look at the recent pictures of them, although few of them still look “acceptable” on appearance at this age but all of them already “out of shape.”

In the Golden Age of Hollywood, the stars of Tinseltown celebrated Christmas in style.

The Second World War was over and all across the country, Americans were rejoicing.

Bob Hope was at the height of his career, but he still took time out to entertain the troops.

Frank Sinatra and his family joined in some yuletide cheer with Dean Martin.

And Marilyn Monroe waited seductively by the chimney in her stockings - with care, of course.

Marilyn wasn't the only actress who was a little naughty on Christmas. Warner Brothers starlet Ida Lupino, an English transplant, was pictured giving Jolly Old Saint Nick a spanking.

The lovely Jayne Mansfield likely made Santa's nice list, though, after she showed up to a USO event at an American military base in Newfoundland, Canada, and danced with a few of the lucky soldiers stationed there.

  • Before they became screen sirens and were the objects of men's fantasies the world over, Marilyn Monroe (named Norma Jeane at birth), Elizabeth Taylor and Audrey Hepburn were just the youthful teenagers filled with dreams and hopes of making a name for themselves.  In a collection of black and white photographs from TIME & LIFE, the young actress are seen between the years of 1939 to 1961 as their careers just started to take off. The faces of the young actress show the innocence and expectation as they launch their careers in Tinseltown, unaware of where the shimmering but sometimes dangerous road to fame might take them.

Hollywood photographer Sid Avery made a lifelong career out of catching the biggest and brightest stars in unguarded, private moments. But compared to today's world of paparazzi long lens and ever-present camera phones, Sid Avery was on first-name terms with Hollywood royalty including Frank Sinatra, Audrey Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart and Dean Martin.  A stunning new collection of his photographs from the 1940s onwards, shows how Avery disarmed his subjects and turned a quick snapshot into an unforgettable art form.

Avery became known for working with the icons of Hollywood - Frank Sinatra and the rest of the Rat Pack, Audrey Hepburn, Marlon Brando and Elizabeth Taylor were among them.

He had access to stars not only on film sets such as Rebel Without A Cause and Giant but at their homes, in restaurants and occasionally on a yacht.

In later life, Mr Avery founded the Motion Picture and Television Photo Archive, which has been continued by his son Ron following his death in 2002.

One of the photographer's most iconic photographs was of Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr and Dean Martin with other cast members of the 1960 movie Ocean's 11.

Staring moodily across a pool table, the actors lean into the camera in a timeless scene that was captured in a single shot.

Mr Avery was invited to recreate it 40 years later on the set of the re-make with George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and Julia Roberts.
