Germany's War at Sea

Moving troops and supplies by sea was vital to all armies involved in the war. The battle for control of the seas led to an arms race, new deadly tactics, and unprecedented loss of life at sea. The land war in Europe became a destructive machine, consuming supplies, equipment, and soldiers at massive rates. Resupply ships from the home front and allies streamed across the Atlantic, braving submarine attacks, underwater mines, and aerial bombardment. Battleships clashed with each other from the Indian Ocean to the North Sea, competing for control of colonial territory and home ports. New technologies were invented and refined, such as submarine warfare, camouflaged hulls, and massive water-borne aircraft carriers. And countless thousands of sailors, soldiers, passengers, and crew members were sent to the bottom of the sea. On this 100-year anniversary, I've gathered photographs of the Great War from dozens of collections, some digitized for the first time, to try to tell the story of the conflict, those caught up in it, and how much it affected the world.

Luth commanded several U-boats in almost every theatre of the undersea war from Norway to the Indian Ocean.
In 1944, after 16 war patrols including one that lasted a record 203-days at sea, he was made the youngest commandant of the German naval academy at just 30 years old.
A year later he was killed while drunkenly walking back to his navy base by an 18-year-old guard who thought he was an enemy and shot him in the head after he failed to say the password in the dark. The guard was let off.

Vaus said he was moved to write about Luth after seeing a photograph of him.
'Believe it or not, I saw a photograph of Lüth in a hallway at the German Naval Academy in 1977, five years before I started writing' he said.
'Our guide explained Lüth's story to us. I was a midshipman in the Navy at the time, so I found the story behind the picture fascinating and it stuck with me.
'There are three main reasons why I find his story so interesting; firstly, he was simultaneously wildly successful and completely unknown.
'Second, the circumstances surrounding his death were intriguing and way out of line with the rest of his, or any U-boat commander's, career and finally no one had written about him before.'

The aerial images show U-570 on the surface of the north Atlantic with its defeated crew stood on deck waving a white flag after they were overcome by an air attack.
U-570 was one of only six enemy submarines captured by the Allies in the Second World War so hardly any photos showing the moment of capture exist.
The submarine was captured on its first ever patrol in August 24, 1941 and was eventually recommissioned by the Royal Navy as HMS Graph.
In one image, there is a dinghy containing two Royal Navy officers who would go on to board the U-570 and seized its cipher machine to be investigated by the codebreakers at Bletchley Park.

How the German crew of the U-570 surrendered after thinking a depth charge had caused a deadly gas leak

In August 1941 several Hudson light bombers flew from their base in Iceland to patrol the north Atlantic for 'wolf packs' of U-boats when they spotted U-570.
Four 250lbs depth charges were dropped on it with one exploding 10 yards from the craft, causing damage.
The U-boat surfaced and the commander and 10 of his shocked crew emerged on deck waving a white sheet, prompting the bombers to halt their attack.
The inexperienced crew had wrongly thought the attack caused a deadly leak of chlorine gas, prompting them to surrender.
The 220ft long U-boat was towed to Reykjavik the following day and more valuable German codebooks were recovered.
It was later taken to Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbrua, for repair and was then commissioned into the Royal Navy as HMS Graph to be used against the Germans.
The officers were later sent to a PoW camp in Cumbria and there a court martial was held by other German prisoners, which found them guilty of cowardice.

A year after the incident Gp Capt Whittle was involved in an air accident. But he was killed when a German air raid on the hospital in Torquay, Devon, where he was recuperating.
His archive that includes his logbooks, photos, a letter of condolence on his death sent to his family by King George VI, RAF maps and his uniform are now being sold by a direct descendant of his.
Andrew Aldridge, of Henry Aldridge and Son of Devizes, Wilts, said: 'These black and white photographs showing the moment the U-boat was captured are truly remarkable and exceptionally rare.
'They were taken by one of the crew members of an RAF Hudson bomber which had forced it to the surface.Share
'Rather than be obliterated in a further attack the German crew surrendered. The images are shown in graphic detail with the date and time they were taken shown on each image.
'The pictures show about 20 of the crew stood on the deck and on the conning tower and you can just about make out a white object which may well be the white sheet signalling their surrender.
'Only a handful of German submarines were captured intact by the Allies in the war and when they were they provided an invaluable opportunity to seized enemy codebooks.'
Gp Capt Whittle, from Cheshire, joined the Royal Naval Air Service in 1918 and his career spanned the two world wars, culminating in him commanding the RAF base in Iceland.
His archive is being sold at for £2,000 on December 16.

German undersea hunters that frightened Churchill

U-boats posed such a threat to the Allies that Winston Churchill said: 'The only thing that ever really frightened me during the war was the U-boat peril'.
Most of Britain's food came in across the North Atlantic, and the Germans tried to choke this lifeline in order to starve the country into surrender.
Control of the ocean was also vital for the safe transport of Allied troops into the Mediterranean and North Africa.
Thousands of Allied seamen met there deaths in its freezing waters after being torpedoed by U-boats.
At first the vessels operated singly, but later they attacked in groups, which the British termed wolfpacks.
It was only when the Allies learned to group merchant ships with destroyers that losses decreased.
The arrival of the US Navy, which took over escort duties from May 1941, also helped swing the so-called Battle of the Atlantic in favour of the Allies.

  • It entered service in March 1918, made two patrols but failed to sink any targets.
  • U-boats were used in both world wars by Germany in an attempt to cut Britain’s North Atlantic lifeline to America. They hunted in groups known as ‘wolf packs’.
  • Patrols could take up to six months and crews were not able to change their clothes apart from a single change of underwear and socks

Battle of Jutland, also called Battle of the Skagerrak,  (May 31–June 1, 1916), the only major encounter between the British and German fleets in World War I, fought in the Skagerrak, an arm of the North Sea, about 60 miles (97 km) off the coast of Jutland (Denmark).
British naval intelligence had alerted admirals John Jellicoe and David Beatty that Admiral Reinhard Scheer had left port with his German High Seas Fleet. Beatty, in command of a scouting force of battle cruisers, spotted a similar German force under Admiral Franz von Hipper and pursued it toward the main German fleet. At about 4 pm both sides opened fire. The British suffered heavy losses and turned back toward Jellicoe’s main British fleet, with the Germans in pursuit. After 6 pm the main fleets encountered each other, and the battle raged again. In the dusk the British had the advantage, and Scheer soon turned away. But when the German fleet turned once more to head for home, it again ran directly into the British fleet, which had maneuvered in such a way that it lay between the German fleet and the German ports. At this second crisis, Scheer ordered his battle cruisers and torpedo boats to charge the British fleet and thereby cover a second retreat of his battleships. Jellicoe, arguably overestimating the danger of torpedo attacks, also turned away, and the battle thus came to an indecisive end. Both sides claimed a victory—Germany because it had destroyed or damaged many more ships, Britain because it retained control of the North Sea.

The scale of Jutland is extraordinary. The British had 151 ships, the Germans 99: at Trafalgar in 1805, the British, French and Spanish fleets totalled less than half that number. The only meeting between the German High Seas Fleet and the British Grand Fleet was the largest naval engagement of World War I.

The British suffered serious losses, including the battlecruiser Indefatigable, Invincible and Queen Mary, and three armoured cruisers and eight destroyers; over 6,000 British sailors died. The Germans lost about half that number of men and half the tonnage, but only six of their ships remained undamaged. The High Seas Fleet, forced back into port, was never risked again in a major battle. The rest of the war at sea focused almost entirely on the U-boat threat.

The Zeebrugge Raid took place on April 23, 1918. The Royal Navy attempted to block the Belgian port of Bruges-Zeebrugge by sinking older ships in the canal entrance, to prevent German vessels from leaving port.
