CHINA'S GREATEST MONUMENTS AND STRUCTURES
Beginning in the 7th century BC, a series of massive defensive fortifications were constructed along China's northern border. Built to protect China from northern attacks, the walls stretched out for thousands of kilometers, many joining together to become the Great Wall of China. Over several centuries, the wall and thousands of supporting structures were built across mountains, deserts, and rivers, eventually stretching more than 20,000 kilometers in length. Sections of the wall near large cities are well-maintained, but many remote areas are slowly being reclaimed by nature. China puts on spectacular light and fireworks show to celebrate the completion of the world's longest sea bridge
- Stunning fireworks were a part of the lighting-up ceremony for the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge
- Main part of the 34-mile traffic link has been complete, but the opening date is yet to be decided
- The £12 billion project also includes a 4.2-mile tunnel, said to be the world's longest undersea passage
- Workers used 420,000 tonnes of steel to build the bridge, which would be enough to build 60 Eiffel Towers
If there is a country that knows how to build big bridges and put up fireworks shows, it is China.
On the last day of 2017, the country celebrated the completion of the world's longest sea bridge, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, with a spectacular fireworks display.
The fireworks were a part of the lighting-up ceremony for the mammoth motorway bridge and were witnessed by around 10,000 construction workers, reported China Global Television Network. The enormous sea bridge is now illuminated with beautiful LED lights every night.

Enormous: The mega structure, connecting Hong Kong, Macau and Zhuhai, stretches 34 miles and cost £12 billion to build
Stretching 34 miles over waters, the £12 billion bridge connects Hong Kong, Macau and Zhuhai - three of China's most important and prosperous cities.
It's understood that the main part of the bridge is now complete, and the bridge is waiting for the final quality checks before it could be officially opened.
According to People's Daily, it has taken China 14 years to plan and construct the enormous structure. The state paper also said the main section of the bridge is now ready for traffic.
Frank Chan, Secretary for Transport and Housing of Hong Kong said the bridge is being built by three different governments, so it can only open when all sides are ready.
Chan said the bridge's exact opening date is subject to the decision of the central government of China.

Luminous: The traffic link was lit up on December 31 during a ceremony that was witnessed by 10,000 bridge builders
The major part of the the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge was completed in July.
The traffic link also includes a tunnel which runs under the Pearl River Estuary between the three cities.
The tunnel is located 40 metres (25 miles) below the sea level and measures 6.7 kilometres (4.2 miles) in length. It's said to be the longest undersea tunnel in the world and goes under the shipping lanes on the Lingding Ocean.
The bridge's total length is 34 miles, making it 14 miles longer than the width of the English Channel from Dover to Calais
The massive structure is due to cut the travel time from Hong Kong to Zhuhai from the currently three hours down to 30 minutes. It's a part of the government's effort in building a greater Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macau bay area.
Workers used 420,000 tonnes of steel to construct the bridge, which would be enough to build 60 Eiffel Towers.
The bridge's total length is 55 kilometres (34 miles), making it 14 miles longer than the width of the English Channel from Dover in the United Kingdom to Calais in France.
The bridge has cost some HK$ 112 billion (£12 billion), according to Hong Kong newspaper Ta Kung Pao.

THREE GORGES DAM
It is an scene of almost apocalyptic proportions.
Bystanders are dwarfed as they stand watching a tremendous rush of water gushing through gaps in a dam in China, part of a carefully-choreographed operation to remove silt from the Yellow River in Luoyang, in the Henan province.
This annual operation sees more than 30 million tonnes of silt sent downstream a year, with more than 390 million tonnes shifted this way over the last 13 years.

The Yellow River authority says such operations lowers the river bed in the lower reach of the river by an average of 2.03 meters each year.
The dam stands at 154m (505ft) tall and is 1,317m (4,321ft) wide. When it was built opened in 2000, following a six-year construction, it had cost US$3.5billion to construct

The Three Gorges Dam is a hydroelectric dam that spans the Yangtze River by the town of Sandouping, located in Yiling District, Yichang, Hubei province, China. As well as producing electricity, the dam is intended to increase the Yangtze River’s shipping capacity and reduce the potential for floods downstream by providing flood storage space.
China relocated 1.3 million people during the 17 years it took to complete the dam. Even after finishing the $59 billion project last month, the threat of landslides along the dam’s banks will force tens of thousands to move again. It’s a reminder of the social and environmental challenges that have dogged the world’s largest hydroelectric project.
While there has been little protest among residents who will be relocated a second time, the environmental fallout over other big investments in China has become a hot-button issue ahead of a leadership transition this year.
