Saab's $85m Gripen E fighter to take on the F-35: Swedish jet makes its maiden flight (and unlike its competitor, it works perfectly)

Sweden's answer to the F-35 has taken its maiden flight, maker Saab has revealed.
During the 40-minute flight over the eastern parts of Östergötland, the latest Gripen executed a series of maneuvers to test its systems, including extending and retracting its landing gear. 
The Gripen E 'Smart Fighter' is aimed at markets not yet cleared to buy the troubled Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

THE SMART FIGHTER 

The Gripen E 39-8 prototype has a 15.2 metre (50ft) long body and a wingspan of 8.6 metres (28ft).
This allows it to manage a take-off weight of 16,500 kg (36.376lb).
It can reach Mach 2 (1,522 mph, 2,450 km/h) at high altitude with a turnaround time between missions of just ten minutes. 
It is designed to carry more weapons further, and to track multiple threats using the latest type of radar.
Like others in the range, the Gripen E has a delta wing and fly-by-wire flight avionics.
It also has greater fuel capacity, 20 per cent more thrust, more pylons, in-flight refuelling capability and increased take-off weight. the $85 million Gripen E or Gripen E/F is completely redesigned with an all-new avionics suite and software that allows it to be modified at short notice without extensive layovers. It's fully NATO interoperable and includes Network Centric Warfare (NCW) technology for advanced data communications, dual data links, satellite communications,

It also has a 27 mm Mauser BK27 gun, which can be used in air-to-surface attacks against land and sea targets.
'The flight was just as expected, with the aircraft performance matching the experience in our simulations,' pilot Marcus Wandt said after the flight.
'Its acceleration performance is impressive with smooth handling. 
'Needless to say I'm very happy to have piloted this maiden flight.' 
Like others in the range, the Gripen E has a delta wing and fly-by-wire flight avionics.
But unlike some others in the line, it has a greater fuel capacity, 20 per cent more thrust, more pylons, in-flight refuelling capability and increased take-off weight.

About 500 people, including Swedish Defence Minister Peter Hultqvist and Brazilian air force commander Nivaldo Luiz Rossato, watched the rollout of the new Gripen E last week.
The event took place in Linkoping, about 105 miles (170km) southeast of Stockholm.

'The Gripen E ensures that Gripen as a brand keeps going against the Rafale, Typhoon and F-35,' said Francis Tusa, editor of Defence Analysis.
Selling for about $85 million excluding arms, the Gripen E is slightly cheaper than Rafale or Typhoon and significantly cheaper than the single-engined F-35, which is marketed for stealth, he added.
But critics say the Gripen lacks the flexibility of twin-engined rivals or the same geopolitical support as U.S., French or pan-European alternatives.
The aircraft, which is already proving in demand, has been in development for about 10 years. The first test flight is expected later this year.
Brazil has ordered 36 Gripen fighters for delivery between 2019 and 2024.
The revamped Gripen E is also one of five aircraft which has attracted Finland's interest as it weighs an order for dozens of jets, according to industry executives.
Boeing's F-18, Dassault Aviation's Rafale, Lockheed Martin's F-35 and the Eurofighter Typhoon, involving BAE Systems, may also be considered.

Saab said it is also monitoring possible fighter purchases in India, which some say could seek almost 100 warplanes once it completes a delayed order for 36 French Rafales.
'I think we have a very good opportunity in India. We can make an attractive offer that would suit the Indians with their Make in India concept,' Saab aeronautics head Ulf Nilsson said in an interview.
Earlier versions of the plane are in service in the air forces of Sweden, South Africa, Czech Republic, Hungary and Thailand.

But despite a price tag of $400 billion for 2,457 planes, the fifth-generation fighter has been plagued with issues.
Now, a new report says problems with its logistics software system could ground the entire fleet.
The issue is with what the Department of Defense officials call the 'brains' of plane, also known as the Autonomic Logistics Information System (ALIS).
A Government Accountability Office report says a failure 'could take the entire fleet offline' because there is no backup system.
The report also says a lack of testing done of the software will mean it's not ready for its deployment by the Air Force in August and the Navy in 2018.
The 'brains' of the F35 are one of three major components, with the other two being the engine and airframe.
CNN points out that the software runs on ground computers rather than operating on the plane itself.
It is designed to support operations, mission planning and to spot any maintenance issues with the vehicle.
'Program officials said that if ALIS is not fully functional, the F-35 could not be operated as frequently as intended,' the report said.
'But a DoD commissioned plan found that schedule slippage and functionality problems with ALIS could lead to $20-100 billion in additional costs.'
So far, the software has been so flawed that maintenance crews have had to resort labour-intensive alternatives.

The F-35 was billed as a fighter jet that could do almost everything the U.S. military desired, serving the Air Force, Marine Corps and Navy – and even Britain's Royal Air Force and Royal Navy – all in one aircraft design. 
It's supposed to replace and improve upon several current – and aging – aircraft types with widely different missions. 
It's marketed as a cost-effective, powerful multi-role fighter airplane significantly better than anything potential adversaries could build in the next two decades. 
But it's turned out to be none of those things.

While all manner of strange and quirky craft have taken to the skies for the annual Paris air show, a a rare aerobatic display from the American F-35 has wowed crowds - and sent NATO a clear message. 
Lockheed Martin today revealed footage of the incredible flights, which are being carried out daily at the show.
The six-minute flight features a full power takeoff showing off its 40,000 pounds of thrust, steep climbs, and the tightest possible turns, and is designed to head off doubts over the controversial jet's ability to dogfight.

'After 10 years since first flight, with our first opportunity to demonstrate the capabilities and the maneuverability of the F-35, we are going to crush years of misinformation about what this aircraft is capable of doing,' Lockheed Martin test pilot Billie Flynn said in an interview with Aviation Week.
In an Associated Press interview at the opening Monday of the Paris Air Show, Brigadier General Select Todd Canterbury said the displays of the new jet are to 'showcase the capability to all of our European partners and NATO allies' and 'to reassure them that we are committed to NATO 100 percent and that we have got the capability to respond to any action necessary.'
Canterbury, director of the Air Force F-35 Integration Office at the Pentagon, also spoke about recent problems that grounded F-35s at Luke Airforce Base in Arizona.
U.S. President Donald Trump has called NATO obsolete and excoriated European allies last month for not spending enough on their own defenses.

THE INCREDIBLE F-35 PARIS SHOW 

The flight demonstration starts with an afterburner takeoff, almost immediately pointing the nose to the sky and letting the aircraft climb away essentially vertically. 
This impressive move is unique to the F-22 and the F-35, the pilot says.
Next, the F35 will reverse back in front of the crowd, and perform a 'square loop' to show the aircraft's instantaneous pitch capability and high angle-of-attack (AOA) maneuverability. 
It then turns around, reverses back in front of the crowd, and perform a slow-speed pass. 
Afterwards, it lights up the afterburner and fly straight up into the sky once again.
It then pulls up vertically in front of the crowd to execute a 'power loop,' where the aircraft flips on its back.
Next is a spiral at 50 degrees AOA, called a 'pedal turn.'
After reversing again in front of the crowd, the last move is a maximum-G, 360-deg. turn, which highlights the maximum-rate, minimum-radius-turn capability of the aircraft.Since May 2, F-35 pilots on five occasions reported symptoms of hypoxia, or oxygen deprivation, he said.

The Air Force says the F-35's backup oxygen system worked in each instance, and the pilot was able to land the plane safely.
'It could range to anything from headaches, to nausea, to color-blindness,' he told the AP.
Planes were subsequently grounded at Luke, and only began flying again a few days ago, even though the cause of the fault has not been found. 
A team of engineers, test pilots, medics and others experts are 'digging into this problem 24 hours a day,' to try to identify the cause, Canterbury said.
'It could be lack of oxygen. It could be too much oxygen, too much carbon dioxide.'

There have been similar incidents 'across a number of bases, but not in clusters like we saw at Luke.'
The local commander at Luke will decide when the planes can fly again, he said. Canterbury said the pilots will 'start flying as soon as they can. They are ready.'
Luke is a training base for F-35 pilots. Operational units have not had such issues, he said.

The F-35 flew briefly at the Farnborough Air Show last year but this year in Paris it will have its debut aerial demonstrations.
The daily aerobatic shows by the F-35 promise to be spectacular, punctuated by the howl of its 40,000 pounds of thrust.

THE F-35 LET DOWN 

The unit cost per airplane, above $100 million, is roughly twice what was promised early on. 
Even after President Trump lambasted the cost of the program in February, the price per plane dropped just $7 million – less than 7 percent.
The F-35 is designed to be stealthy primarily in the X-band, the radar frequency range most commonly used for targeting in air-to-air combat.
In other radar frequencies, the F-35 is not so stealthy, making it vulnerable to being tracked and shot down using current – and even obsolete – weapons.

And yet, the U.S. is still throwing huge sums of money at the project. 
Essentially, the Pentagon has declared the F-35 'too big to fail.' 
As a retired member of the U.S. Air Force and current university professor of finance who has been involved in and studied military aviation and acquisitions, I find the F-35 to be one of the greatest boondoggles in recent military purchasing history.
The Pentagon is trying to argue that just because taxpayers have flushed more than $100 billion down the proverbial toilet so far, we must continue to throw billions more down that same toilet. 
That violates the most elementary financial principles of capital budgeting, which is the method companies and governments use to decide on investments. 
So-called sunk costs, the money already paid on a project, should never be a factor in investment decisions. 
Rather, spending should be based on how it will add value in the future.It's also become the most expensive defense program in world history, at around US$1.5 trillion before the fighter is phased out in 2070. Keeping the F-35 program alive is not only a gross waste in itself: Its funding could be spent on defense programs that are really useful and needed for national defense, such as anti-drone systems to defend U.S. troops.
Part of the enormous cost has come as a result of an effort to share aircraft design and replacement parts across different branches of the military. 
In 2013, a study by the RAND Corporation found that it would have been cheaper if the Air Force, Marine Corps and Navy had simply designed and developed separate and more specialized aircraft to meet their specific operational requirements.
The company building the F-35 has made grand claims. 

TRUMP'S F-35 PRICE CUT

Lockheed Martin Corp is close to a deal to significantly lower the cost of its F-35 aircraft, Chief Executive Officer Marillyn Hewson said on Friday after meeting with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.
'I certainly share his views that we need to get the best capability to our men and women in uniform, and we have to get it at the lowest possible price,' Hewson said to reporters in Trump Tower.
Hewson had previously assured Trump she would drive down the cost of the company's fighter jet, after he tweeted last month that he was asking rival aerospace company Boeing Co whether it could offer a cheaper alternative to the F-35, based on its existing F-18 Super Hornet.
Trump has threatened and rebuked some of America's largest companies, creating a new business risk for those who have been or fear being targeted.Lockheed Martin said the plane would be far better than current aircraft – 'four times more effective' in air-to-air combat, 'eight times more effective' in air-to-ground combat and 'three times more effective' in recognizing and suppressing an enemy's air defenses. 
It would, in fact, be 'second only to the F-22 in air superiority.' 
In addition, the F-35 was to have better range and require less logistics support than current military aircraft. 
The Pentagon is still calling the F-35 'the most affordable, lethal, supportable, and survivable aircraft ever to be used.'

In January 2015, mock combat testing pitted the F-35 against an F-16, one of the fighters it is slated to replace.

One key reason the F-35 doesn't possess the world-beating air-to-air prowess promised, and is likely not even adequate when compared with its current potential adversaries, is that it was designed first and foremost to be a stealthy airplane.

In the nearly two decades since, that incident has been studied in depth not only by the U.S., but also by potential adversaries seeking weaknesses in passive radar stealth aircraft.
Of course, radar is not the only way to locate and target an aircraft. 
One can also use an aircraft's infrared emissions, which are created by friction-generated heat as it flies through the air, along with its hot engines. 
Several nations, particularly the Russians, have excellent passive infrared search and tracking systems, that can locate and target enemy aircraft with great precision – sometimes using lasers to measure exact distances, but without needing radar.
It's also very common in air-to-air battles for opposing planes to come close enough that their pilots can see each other. 
The F-35 is as visible as any other aircraft its size.
Lockheed Martin and the Pentagon say the F-35's superiority over its rivals lies in its ability to remain undetected, giving it 'first look, first shot, first kill.' 
Hugh Harkins, a highly respected author on military combat aircraft, called that claim 'a marketing and publicity gimmick' in his book on Russia's Sukhoi Su-35S, a potential opponent of the F-35. 
He also wrote, 'In real terms an aircraft in the class of the F-35 cannot compete with the Su-35S for out and out performance such as speed, climb, altitude, and maneuverability.'

Other critics have been even harsher. 
Pierre Sprey, a cofounding member of the so-called 'fighter mafia' at the Pentagon and a co-designer of the F-16, calls the F-35 an 'inherently a terrible airplane' that is the product of 'an exceptionally dumb piece of Air Force PR spin.' 
He has said the F-35 would likely lose a close-in combat encounter to a well-flown MiG-21, a 1950s Soviet fighter design. 
Robert Dorr, an Air Force veteran, career diplomat and military air combat historian, wrote in his book 'Air Power Abandoned,' 'The F-35 demonstrates repeatedly that it can't live up to promises made for it. … It's that bad.'
How did the F-35 go from its conception as the most technologically advanced, do-it-all military aircraft in the world to a virtual turkey? 
Over the decades-long effort to meet a real military need for better aircraft, the F-35 program is the result of the merging or combination of several other separate and diverse projects into a set of requirements for an airplane that is trying to be everything to everybody.

In combat the difference between winning and losing is often not very great. 
With second place all too often meaning death, the Pentagon seeks to provide warriors with the best possible equipment. 
The best tools are those that are tailor-made to address specific missions and types of combat. 
Seeking to accomplish more tasks with less money, defense planners looked for ways to economize.
For a fighter airplane, funding decisions become a balancing act of procuring not just the best aircraft possible, but enough of them to make an effective force. 
This has lead to the creation of so-called 'multi-role' fighter aircraft, capable both in air-to-air combat and against ground targets. 
Where trade-offs have to happen, designers of most multi-role fighters emphasize aerial combat strength, reducing air-to-ground capabilities. 
With the F-35, it appears designers created an airplane that doesn't do either mission exceptionally well. 
They have made the plane an inelegant jack-of-all-trades, but master of none – at great expense, both in the past and, apparently, well into the future.
I believe the F-35 program should be immediately cancelled; the technologies and systems developed for it should be used in more up-to-date and cost-effective aircraft designs. 
Specifically, the F-35 should be replaced with a series of new designs targeted toward the specific mission requirements of the individual branches of the armed forces, in lieu of a single aircraft design trying to be everything to everyone.

The Pentagon may soon unleash an army of robotic drones that are fast and smart enough to fly alongside fighter planes.
Two classes of drone designed to act as airborne wingmen in aerial missions have been unveiled by a Pentagon-backed startup in the Silicon Valley. 
Though still in the testing phase, the drones could one day be used to protect human life by absorbing the first wave of an aerial attack.

Building of the drones was funded by the Defense Department’s Silicon Valley laboratory, dubbed DIUx, and the Air Force. 
The UAVs use artificial intelligence to copy the movements of nearby planes, which means they don't need a ground-based pilot to keep up. 
'These systems can conduct fully autonomous missions,' Steven Fenley, president of Kratos' unmanned systems division, told the Wall Street Journal.
The company has already flown the planes alongside manned jets and will carry out a second round of testing above California's Mojave Desert this summer.

'In order to exploit the maneuverability of one of these aircraft, you need to have the sensing ability of when to exploit it,' Dave Deptula, a retired Air Force general who now serves as dean of the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies, told the Wall Street Journal.
Using drones could help to protect human life by acting as a first line of aerial defence.
The drones also cost considerably less than manned aircraft. The reusable drones cost from $2 million to $3 million (£1.6m to £2.4m).
The move comes as the US army continue to develop robots that could play a major part in wars of the future. 
Similar efforts have been made by the Navy, which is investing in autonomous submarines that scout the ocean floor and seek out mines.

It comes as experts have increasingly warned that robotic weapons will soon play a much larger role in warfare than they already do, and could even overtake human presence on the battlefield in the next decade.

The $10,539,652 contract from the US Department of Defense calls for Six3 to ‘design, develop, and validate system prototypes for a combined-arms squad.
Such a squad, it explains, 'combines humans and unmanned assets, ubiquitous communications and information, and advanced capabilities in all domains to maximize squad performance in increasingly complex operational environments.’
From unmanned trucks and aircraft, to ‘ghost fleets’ of underwater drones, the military has in many ways turned its sights on autonomous technology to improve capabilities.
And, a similar shift can be seen all around the world.
Russia, for example, has also been working on ways to integrate combat robots into battle, including armed sentry drones, according to RT.
Experts predict robots are the future of warfare – and it may come sooner than many expect.
‘Intelligent robotic weapons – they’re a reality, and they will be much more of a reality by 2030,’ said John Bassett, a former British intelligence officer, last year, RT reports.
‘At some point around 2025 or thereabouts, the US Army will actually have more combat robots than it will have human soldiers.’

The US Army plans to test the trucks in automated mode along the Blue Water Bridge in Michigan.
'We also want the Army vehicles to drive themselves,' Paul Rogers, head of research for the Army, told CBS Detroit .
'You're crossing a steel girder bridge and you look for the different radar reflections, whether or not your system gets confused or not,' Mr Rogers said.

The US Army is thought to be keen to make use of autonomous trucks to help free up its personnel for other roles while also allowing it to send unmanned vehicles into dangerous areas.
Attacks on vehicles and convoys are a common cause of casualties in war zones while accidents also contribute to military fatalities.
According to the Times Herald of Port Huron, the test on the Interstate 69 highway in Michigan will be the first time the army has taken its self-driving vehicles onto public roads. Earlier this year, experts explained that the use of robots could help the US military to cut costs and would allow them to remove soldiers from potentially dangerous environments, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
In many ways, they say the move has already begun, with newer warships like the USS Zumwalt designed to be manned by half the crew of previous destroyers.
Robots could take on a number of tasks, from managing and delivering supplies or analyzing thousands of legal documents, to quickly diagnosing diseases and assisting in the operating room, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

‘Just as in the civilian economy, automation will likely have a big impact on military organizations in logistics and manufacturing,’ Michael Horowitz, a University of Pennsylvania professor and an expert on weaponized robots told the San Diego Union-Tribune.
‘The US military is very likely to pursue forms of automation that reduce ‘back-office’ costs over time, as well as remove soldiers from non-combat deployments where they might face risk from adversaries on fluid battlefields, such as in transportation.’
Robots could also be used to detect and dismantle mines, while unmanned drone helicopters can pinpoint targets, map terrain, and detect bad weather.
