A home with all the trimmings:

A stunning 16th Century property once described as 'the perfect house for Christmas' by the Ideal Home magazine has gone on sale for almost £2million.

Grade II listed Sevington House was an ambitious Grand Design-style conversion project that became the lead story of the December 1939 edition of the publication.

With the country at war, the magazine's editors had been looking for a special property to feature to bring festive cheer to their readers.

They chose Sevington in Wiltshire after seeing pictures of the manor house, splashing it across 14 pages of the magazine, telling the story of the radical project, which was much less common in the 1930s.

The property was formerly a row of two cottages and a stable until the estate manager and architect for the local country squire spotted the potential to convert them into a small manor house.

Images of the property's historic features including its original timber fireplace, beamed rooms, stained glass windows and wood panelled dining rooms were spread across the seven pages.

The magazine cost one shilling and was printed in Britain and in France.

The property may have classic details but it also features all the features of an modern luxury home. Pictured here is the heated swimming pool in the garden of the countryside house, now on the market for £1.98million

Sevington House is made of 16th Century Cotswold stone and has five bedrooms, four reception rooms, a games room and a swimming pool in the grounds.

It has been owned by Graham Lee - a former company director, for the last 16 years - who is converting an outbuilding on the same estate into a new home and has now put it on the market.

Mr Lee, 59, said: 'Ideal Home magazine sent an artist to the house to draw various aspects of the property and ran a 14 page article on the transformation and how to remodel a row of terraced cottages into a small manor house.

'Because it was for their December edition they called it the perfect home for Christmas.

'I am very enthusiastic about the property and I love it but I am selling it because I have built a new house within the grounds.'

In the 1930s when Sir Audley Dallas Neeld lived in the magnificent country mansion of Grittleton House, his estate manager, George Parker-Pearson, came up with the idea of converting the two cottages and stable.

The country squire financed the work and supplied the labour but allowed Mr Parker-Pearson to live there.

Sevington House is on the market with Knight Frank estate agents for £1.98 million.
