THE EVER CHANGING WEST

In the 1860s and 70s, photographer Timothy O'Sullivan created some of the best-known images in American History. After covering the U.S. Civil War, (many of his photos appear in this earlier series), O'Sullivan joined a number of expeditions organized by the federal government to help document the new frontiers in the American West. The teams were composed of soldiers, scientists, artists, and photographers, and tasked with discovering the best ways to take advantage of the region's untapped natural resources. O'Sullivan brought an amazing eye and work ethic, composing photographs that evoked the vastness of the West. He also documented the Native American population as well as the pioneers who were already altering the landscape. Above all, O'Sullivan captured -- for the first time on film -- the natural beauty of the American West in a way that would later influence Ansel Adams and thousands more photographers to come.   A man sits in a wooden boat with a mast on the edge of the Colorado River in the Black Canyon, Mojave County, Arizona. Since at least the 17th century, natives, Europeans, and later American pioneers carved names and messages into the rock face as they paused. In 1906, a law was passed, prohibiting further carving. (Timothy O'Sullivan/Library of Congress) Sunday marked the 75th anniversary of the opening of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge. Before 1937, the city's growth was hampered by a reliance on ferry traffic. The 8,981 ft (2,737 m) suspension bridge changed that, creating a link between San Francisco to Marin County. Its construction was completed under budget, but at the cost of 11 workers' lives. Collected here are images from the building of this iconic bridge, as well as scenes from its 75 years of service and from Sunday's celebration. Getting noticed for quality landscape and wildlife photography is difficult enough, but Kevin manages it with just an iPhone After catching the travelling bug, the photographer has stayed on the road, capturing haunting scenes like this He has to choose his lighting carefully to match the iPhone's limited dynamic range - but still manages stunning results Kevin Russ has travelled around the great American West, aiming to photograph the 'essence' of the country Fog with some sun is one of Kevin's mast favourite conditions to shoot in, as it has a 'nice feel' - and it certainly gave this picture an eerie atmosphere. Kevin Russ, a photographer from Portland, has been on the road for a year, and has taken hundreds of photos - all aimed at capturing the essence of the American landscape. Wild, wild west: This looks like something out of a spaghetti Western film - but it's all reality, through the lens of Mr Russ' iPhone The swathes of blue gives this shot an eerie quality, and shows the yawning empty pace that Kevin travelled to capture the feel of America The photographer, who began photographing during his first year of college, says he has spent much of his year living in his car The photographer says the advantage of having an iPhone is that he can keep it in his pocket and process his photos, without having to spend time behind a computer Kevin said he spent seven hours over two days around these moose until they 'just cared less and less' that he was there Kevin Russ said he just stuck his arm out of the window to capture this picture of a bison and says patience is necessary for being a good photographer Kevin says that he enjoys sharing his photos with the Instagram community online, and regularly answers questions from admirers about his work The free spirit says he uses VSCOcam and Afterglow apps to process his photos - which gives him the freedom to travel The haunting blues and greys of this photo are just one of many extraordinary scenes that Kevin has captured Dream job: While many will only dream of packing in their job to hit the road and photograph animals and wildlife, Kevin has thrown off the shackles to pursue his passion. His work involves more than just pointing his iPhone at a scene and snapping it. He told one admirer that for taking pictures of animals, he often has to invest a lot of time and patience to capture them. His photos have captured the rich variety of landscapes that the U.S. has to offer - from the surreal purple-hued rock formation to the sandy-coloured plains Kevin says his favourite subjects are wildlife, and his photos involved trying to get as close to them as possible He says being on the road means opportunities will come to him - but he needs to have an open schedule to fully embrace his nomadic lifestyle Unguarded: Peering into the camera, this wolf gives a piercing look as it stands in the rich green and brown-coloured forest Surreal: The photographer, who has had no formal training, was encouraged by his roommate to develop his passion for photography He said his project became an obsession and 'it just morphed into this lifestyle of living on the road' - now his photos have become an internet hit   High-power lights illuminate the Golden Gate Bridge as part of the span's 75th anniversary celebration in San Francisco, on May 27, 2012. Upon his death in 1972, he bequeathed his collection of 14,500 Kodachrome color slides to his alma mater, Indiana University, where they remain today.
