REMEMBERING THE GEMINI AND THE ATLANTIS PROGRAM

 

Fifty years ago, NASA began a program called Project Gemini, developing deep space travel techniques and equipment to prepare for the upcoming Apollo program. Two unmanned and ten manned missions were flown, and astronauts and engineers accomplished hundreds of goals, including the first American spacewalk, a 14-day endurance test in orbit, space docking, and the highest-ever manned orbit at 1,369 km (850 mi). After the project ended in 1966, many Gemini astronauts brought their experiences with them as they went on to fly Apollo missions to the Moon. Collected here are remarkable images of Project Gemini half a century ago -- some beautiful, some technical, and a few surprisingly intimate.

It’s no wonder that he didn’t want to come back in.

On June 3 1965 astronaut Ed White became the first American to go on a spacewalk – which lasted 23 minutes.

Needless to say, it was quite an experience and flight control had difficulty persuading him to return to the craft.

It is reported that he described clambering back inside as the saddest moment of his life.

However, ground control were very aware that time was not on his side. If he'd stayed out for too long the station tracking the craft from Bermuda would have lost contact - and darkness would have fallen.

When White eased himself out of Gemini IV he was travelling at nearly 18,000mph, 178 miles above Hawaii.

He floated and maneuvered himself around the craft while logging 6,500 miles during his orbital stroll. White was attached to the spacecraft by a 25-foot umbilical line and a 23-foot tether line, both wrapped in gold tape to form one cord.

The visor of his helmet is gold plated to protect him from the unfiltered rays of the sun and his suit was pressurised with oxygen.

He was attached to a hose that supplied the craft with air and was able to move around thanks to a small nitrogen-powered gun.

Nasa, however, was beaten to it by Russia, who sent Alexei Leonov on a spacewalk on March 18, 1965.

It’s widely accepted that the U.S spacewalk was a propaganda response to this.

Ten crews flew during the Gemini missions, which took place between 1965 and 1966. They helped Nasa get ready for moon landings.

An incredible 134 aircraft and 26 ships were involved in recovering the craft when it eventually returned to Earth.

Starting next month, NASA will begin delivering its four Space Shuttle orbiters to their final destinations. After an extensive decommissioning process, the fleet -- which includes three former working spacecraft and one test orbiter -- is nearly ready for public display. On April 17, the shuttle Discovery will be attached to a modified 747 Jumbo Jet for transport to the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in Virginia. Endeavour will go to Los Angeles in mid-September, and in early 2013, Atlantis will take its place on permanent display at Florida's Kennedy Space Center. Test orbiter Enterprise will fly to New York City next month. Gathered here are images of NASA's final days spent processing the Space Shuttle fleet.

With its hundreds of lights and blinking buttons, this is the pilot's-eye view from inside the cockpit of the space shuttle Endeavour as it prepares to make its last journey.

Workmen at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida's Cape Canaveral have been getting the vessel ready for when it goes on display by draining hazardous fuel, disconnecting or removing some systems and replacing the main engines with replicas.

Nasa's 30-year shuttle progamme ended last July with the voyage of Atlantis. Endeavour and Atlantis are to travel to the California Science Center in Los Angeles to go on display later this year.

Endeavour landed at Kennedy Space Center last June, bringing to an end the penultimate mission in the 30-year shuttle programme.

It touched down on the runway for the final time under cover of darkness, just as Atlantis, the last shuttle bound for space, arrived at the launch pad for the grand finale.

Kelly, Vittori and Endeavour's four other astronauts - Gregory Johnson, Michael Fincke, Greg Chamitoff and Andrew Feustel - had returned to Earth after more than two weeks in space completing the U.S. share of repairs at the International Space Station.

After landing Endeavour in front of hundreds of onlookers that included the four Atlantis astronauts, Kelly said: 'It's sad to see her land for the last time, but she really has a great legacy.'

He even marvelled at how good Endeavour still looks, saying: 'It looks like it's ready to go do another mission.'

The last mission of Endeavour, the youngest of the shuttles with 123million miles over 25 flights, lasted 16 days and completed Nasa's role in the space station construction effort that began more than a dozen years ago.

The crew - all experienced spacemen - departed the 220mile-high orbiting outpost.

They installed a $2billion cosmic ray detector, an extension beam and a platform full of spare parts, enough to keep the station operating in the shuttle-less decade ahead.

Nasa is leaving the Earth-to-orbit business behind to focus on expeditions to asteroids and Mars.

Private companies hope to pick up the slack for cargo and crew hauls to the space station. Until then, Americans will continue hitching rides to the station aboard Russian Soyuz capsules at the cost of tens of millions of dollars a seat.

The official tally for Endeavour, after 19 years of flight, was 170 crew members, 299 days in space, 4,671 orbits of Earth and 122,883,151miles.

The flame trench at Launch Pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center endured significant flames, vibrations and other stresses during the space shuttle era. Heading into the future, designers are looking for new, flame and vibration-resistant materials to line the trench. To help in the search, a team of mechanical engineering students at Louisiana State University are to build a scaled-down version of the flame trench that Kennedy's scientists can use to try out sample materials for the trench. At Launch Pad 39A at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the seven slidewire baskets have traveled down the wires to the ground after technicians released them from the 195-foot level for the final time, on March 16, 2012.
